You have some major do-it-yourself skills. Now it's time to use those skills to earn some money, and that might mean starting your own handyman business. This may seem like an overwhelming task, but it really isn't that hard if you use the following tips and tricks.

Determine Your Scope

First, you'll need to determine the scope of your handyman business. You might want to start with small tasks, such as installing light fixtures, fixing leaks, painting, repairing doors, replacing tiles, and assembling furniture. Later, or by request, you could add larger jobs if you have the know-how. Most of your jobs, though, should involve smaller repairs and upgrades — nothing close to a full remodel. Tell your clients exactly what you will and won't do so that no one has any false expectations.

Know the Law

Next, be sure you know the law. Each state has a different set of requirements for licenses for handyman work. If you stick with smaller projects and repairs beneath a certain dollar value and avoid jobs that require “specialized skills,” you might not need a license in some states. Other states require a license for handymen who make over a particular amount per year. Do your research, and get a license if necessary.

Register Your Company

To protect yourself and your business, you’ll need to register your company with the state. An LLC in Virginia is a popular option for people with handyman businesses thanks to its ability to protect your personal assets from your business dealings. Others may opt for an S corporation in Virginia since it provides savings on self-employment taxes. However, these are just two available options. Take some time to research what makes the most sense for your fledgling business.

Write a Business Plan

It never hurts to write up a business plan for a new company, for such a document can keep you on track. Begin with a description of your business's purpose and scope. Then add sections about services, tasks and roles, marketing, and your budget.

Market Your Business

Now it's time to begin marketing your business. Start with word of mouth, and ask your relatives and friends to mention your new venture. They might even have a few things for you to do to get you started. Build a website, too, and set up social media sites. If you aren't getting enough work, consider taking out an advertisement in the local newspaper or putting up some company flyers.

Use Technology

As you get your business up and running, don't neglect technology. There are software apps that can really help you out. You might, for instance, use a construction estimating app for each of your projects. This software allows you to effortlessly calculate costs for labor and materials, figure in taxes, set a payment schedule for customers, and even create a customized template with your branding, company logo, and color scheme.

Also, make sure that your customers have an easy way to pay. You could set up your website with an app that allows customer payments right online. However, be sure to look for an app that makes use of trustworthy financial API bank account balance software, which lets you avoid credit card fees and lets your customers know if they have enough money to make any payments to you. Also, offering online payments makes things convenient for your customers.

Enjoy Your Work

When you've got your handyman business all set up and running, you can focus on enjoying your work. Those do-it-yourself skills might just earn you a good living.
