Thefts of catalytic converters are on the rise across the county and the Fairfax County Police Department is working hard to solve these crimes.
A new catalytic converter can cost almost $2,000, and some insurance plans will cover the cost. However, if you have a high deductible or liability only coverage, then you are responsible for the cost.
Here are some theft prevention tips that are free to implement, or cost less than replacing the catalytic converter:
1. Park vehicles in a secured area if possible.
2. Park in a well-lit area. Maybe in the sight line of a video doorbell or security camera.
3. Apply a commercial catalytic theft prevention device.
Examples can be seen at CatClamps, CAT Security or CAT Shield, and pictured above.
4. Install a motion activated dashcam system.
5. Mark the vehicle identification number (VIN) on the converter with a UV pen, CATGUARD
Label ID, VIN etching, or high temperature paint.
6. See something, say something! By calling to report suspicious persons or activity, you not
only aid the police, you make your community a safer place to live.
While not all thefts are preventable, some simple steps can be taken to make it harder for a criminal. If your catalytic converter does get stolen, contact the police immediately to report the incident.
