Today's #leadership post
“The question isn’t who is going to let me; it’s who is going to stop me?”
- Ayn Rand
If you have been around the management arena for a while you likely have heard the expression that it is better to beg forgiveness than ask permission. One of the obligations of a leader is to take uncomfortable action at times. We don't always have perfect information and there are often times when the right course of action could potentially ruffle some feathers. It is at those times that a leader needs to step forward and demonstrate the courage to make the difficult decision. Leaders tend to be more focused on doing the right thing rather than doing things right. Both are important but there will inevitably come times when doing the right thing carries risk and alienates others and it is those moments when courageous leadership is required. Bold action in the face of adversity requires courage to overcome the fear of failure and the fear of rejection. We are often called upon to buck the prevailing trend. Noone ever said that leadership was easy but if you follow your conscience, do the right thing and take bold action you will attract followers and make the impact you were destined for. There will always be naysayers. A leader moves forward despite them.
During moments when difficult decisions are required it is always a good thing to have a coach to bounce ideas against. To learn how a coach can help you give me a call at 703 445-3133. You will be glad that you did.
