Today's #leadership quote
#
. The art of leadership is saying no, not saying yes. It is very easy to say yes. —Tony Blair
All of us have more things that we can and want to do than available time and energy to do them all. Anything is possible but everything is not therefore we need to be able to say no to some things. Often this is difficult because we are forced to decide who to support and who to disappoint. Inevitably by turning away from some things we are going to alienate some people. When forced to choose between competing interests we will create conflict and most of us would rather avoid conflict and disappointing people. The alternative however is worse. If we fail to say no to some things we in reality are saying no to everything because we will spread ourselves too thin and accomplish bits and pieces of initiatives but never fully commit to one. The key to be able to say no is to have a well defined sense of purpose and using that to establish priorities. Steven Covey said that the key to saying no is to have a more important yes. If we want to achieve that which we are destined for then we need to learn to say no to the things that don't move the needle in that direction. It takes courage to say no but failure to do so will limit our success.
