Today's #leadership quote
“Leadership and culture aren’t about being the boss or being in control; they are about creating shared visions and goals, and then inspiring, empowering and influencing others to achieve more than they ever thought possible.” – Gary Brooks
One of the fallacies of leadership is the image of command and control. We envision great leaders as having all of the answers and complete control over their sphere of influence. The reality is much different. Anyone who is a parent understands that control is an illusion. There is no way that one person can completely control the actions of another. You need to teach and provide a framework for making decisions and set them free to make mistakes and learn and grow. We hope the lessons that we taught form the foundation from which our children make their future decisions while also hoping that they can be better than we were. The same is true for leaders in any walk of life. Our job it to develop the next generation of leaders by providing them a vision and assisting their development so they can lead others. Control is limited by our knowledge and talents while leadership increases our influence as a byproduct of capitalizing on the talents of others. Great leaders produce offspring rather than followers
