Today's #leadership quote
“If you don't like something, change it. If you can't change it, change your attitude.” Maya Angelou
Criticism is the frequently used resource today to address things that we are unhappy about. We are quick to criticize public figures when they do or say something that we don't like. We resort to criticism with our coworkers when we run up against a policy that doesn't coincide with our beliefs. When someone does something that hurts our feelings we often run to our friends to criticize that action. It is a relatively easy and certainly common response to any number of slights or disagreements that we may have. Unfortunately it is also a completely reactive approach that is non productive and only serves to create negative energy. It places us in a victim mentality. If instead we choose a positive response and address the conflict head on rather than complaining we can make a positive impact. We may not be able to change that which bothers us but we may create momentum that causes others to continue to move the ball forward. I am reminded of the serenity prayer by this quote. God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change the courage to change what I can, and the wisdom to know the difference . It may be easy to criticize but it is also largely unproductive. Choose instead to be a champion and make a difference
